The finnish band Myon started out in 1995 and released their debute, Heaven's Garden, in 1998. Four years later Ghost In Paradise saw the light of the day. On the first 2 records the singer was Sami Huotari, but he jumped ship shortly after the release of the second record. In came Jukka Nummi, and the band changed style a little with him to a much more symphonic-sound. Stylewise the band sounds very similar to Saga, when they had their peak.

As ususal on more symphonic-type records, the keyboards plays a big part, this is no exception. Mika Pohjola's keyboards soars throughout the record, and it's damn good! "Still Alive" opens the record and it's one of the 3 best songs on the record, nice bass-intro blended with piano is followed by guitars. "Scars Of The Heart" could have been on any Saga-record, only thing is that it's only 3 minutes long, something that would never happen on a Saga-record. "Died For The Momen"t is a brilliant song, a semi-ballad with superb lyrics. Other favourites are "Before Or Too Late", "Living The Fantasy" and "Fire/Water", songs that makes me smile. There are some fillers on the record, otherwise the ratings would've been higher. A couple of songs are so much Saga that it's scary. "Scars Of The Heart" and "How Does It Feel" are 2 of thoose songs. An odd thing for a "symphonic-AOR-band" is that the songs aren't that long that they usually are, only 3 songs are longer than 4 minutes.

Myon is one of those quirky rock groups which offer up something a little different than the standard melodic hard rock fare. While Finland is famous for its musical quirks, it's normally reserved for bands from the heavier side of life.

Myon have a progressive edge added to their unique delivery of melodic pop rock. These guys really mix it up and deliver an album that readers of this site will either love or loathe. Those that love it will embrace it as something original, mixing pop and progressive and those that don't will be those that prefer their AOR delivered straight up classic style. This is the band's third album and it shows, as it's a strong body of songs. This is a progressive rock album presented in a pop setting, much like the band these guys most compare to – Canada's legendary prog-pop outfit Saga.

So, the delivery is a little quirky, but behind that lie some well written songs. For example, check out Forgive Not Forget – the track has a classic AOR feel to it, with a lead vocal close to that of Ken Tamplin, surrounded by swirling keyboards and the odd change in timing. The ballad Died For The Moment adds a touch of dramatic flair, especially with the vocals and following that, Take Your Side continues the darker mid-album edge. Elsewhere Still Alive has a 80's pop beat and crunchy guitar riff; How Does It Feel has a great hook, although the drum machine is a bit off putting. Fire/Water closes the album with a bang – it's a little heavier and the sound is definitely fuller. Vocalist Jukka Nummi has a voice not unlike Christian rocker Ken Tamplin. While definitely not as commanding in his delivery, his tone however is very pleasing to the ear and helps make the album more enjoyable.

The Bottom Line

The sound is described as clear and fresh. I agree on those points, but think it sounds a little thin in places, especially the drum sound. Drum loops are used in places and the bass could be higher in the mix. However, the overall song quality for the band and it is relatively consistent across the whole album and this should appeal to those that like a taste of progressive music – but from the softer side of the spectrum.

When we reviewed the last (second) album from this Finnish band, it wasn’t clear whether Jukka Nummi would stay as the band’s permanent vocalist or not. So, one of the first things I checked when I got a copy of this album was the position of the vocalist. And indeed, it’s Jukka Nummi who rules the roost on “Slideshow”. Compared with his predecessor Sami Huotari, it’s obvious that he sings better (read: less monotonous).

After the “Ghost In Paradise” tour the band started to write material for this third album and this time it was quickly agreed that keyboard player Mika Pohjola would record, produce, mix and master the album at Soundmix in Oulu, Finland. He introduced some new musical ideas and asked Nummi to write appropriate lyrics. This worked out so well for the first song “Before Or Too Late”, that Nummi got a lot more responsibility and leaves an important mark on the material. The result is a pleasant album that sounds less metal than “Ghost In Paradise” and maybe a little more progressive. With important key roles for the guitars and the keyboards, it’s a joy listening to tracks such as “Died For The Moment”, “Before Or Too Late” and “Fire/Water”.

Although “Slideshow” brings Myon on the right track, I’m sure the best of them has yet to come… (CL)

MYON? Nie gehört, aber das ist ja oft am spannendsten für den Verfasser eines Reviews, geht man doch unvoreingenommen an ein Werk heran. Angekündigt als progressiver Rock im Stile von SAGA, war die Erwartungshaltung meinerseits natürlich recht hoch. Die Band aus Oulu, Finnland, die seit 1995 aktiv ist, veröffentlicht heuer also mit "Slideshow" ihre dritte CD nach "Heaven's Garden" (1998) und "Ghost In Paradise" (2002). Mit Jukka Nummi ist allerdings ein neuer Sänger an Bord. Der Vergleich des neuen Outputs mit SAGA stimmt zumindest bei Tracks wie 'Scars Of The Heart' oder vor allem bei 'Before Or Too Late' zu hundert Prozent. Aber MYON als schlichten Klon der erfolgreichen Kanadier abzustempeln, wäre fahrlässig, denn beispielsweise die starke Halb-Ballade 'Died For The Moment', das groovende 'Take Your Side' oder gerade das getragene und sehr balladeske 'The Letter' beweisen das Gegenteil eindrucksvoll. Der Opener 'Still Alive' ist eine ziemlich starke Mischung aus AOR/Metal/Progrock, die eindeutig die Richtung weist, in die das neue MYON-Album geht. Mit 'Fire/Water' steht dann das absolute Highlight auf der neuen MYON-Scheibe ganz am Ende. Hier ist ein Ohrwurm erster Klasse am Start, der entfernt Anleihen bei Bands wie IRON MAIDEN oder (eingängigen) FATES WARNING macht. Die Produktion von "Slideshow" ist sehr gut und kraftvoll und doch verspielt, nur das ziemlich belanglose Cover-Artwort will sich partout nicht dem zweifelsfrei hohen musikalischen Niveau anpassen, aber das ist natürlich zu verschmerzen. Insgesamt gibt es sicherlich noch ein klein wenig Spielraum nach oben, aber alles andere als MYON für "Slideshow" eine gute Leistung zu bescheinigen, wäre aus meiner Sicht nicht angebracht.

Der Vorteil von MYON ist unweigerlich die Tatsache, dass sie in mehreren Genres "wildern", was nicht negativ gemeint ist, aber so erreichen die Finnen vermutlich mehr an potenziellen Fans. Gute Band, gute Scheibe, gute Sache!

Slideshow’ is the 3rd CD of the Finnish band MYON. Their first 2 were very good Progressive Metal releases, which were released on the labels NOISE and LOW FREQUENCY RECORDS. Now they switched to the UK AOR label ESCAPE MUSIC, and guess what, the band has recorded a more AOR/Melodic Rock based record, which surprisingly sounds quite sensational! The band has a very good lead singer (JUKKA NUMMI) and some of the included songs are very strong AOR tunes (“Forgive not forget”, “Livin’ the fantasy”, “Human nature”, So long” and “Died for the moment”). In the bio the band is being compared to A-HA and SAGA, and although sometimes this is the case (“How does it feel”), MYON sounds on this album basically as a pure 80s AOR band. A song like “Take your side” or “Human nature” is pure 80s uptempo AOR in the style of AGENT, AVION, AIRKRAFT and AVIATOR, no joke, but definitely the truth!!! And I can add many more tunes that make this new MYON record a must-have for any AOR fan! It’s quite unbelievable this is the same band that recorded a few years pure Progressive Metalalbums in the VANDENPLAS style, because on this album the material is much more straight-forward, super melodic and basically pure AOR (except for closing track “Fire/Water” which is like their earlier albums, so Progmetal). I think it’s a good change they have gone through, because the AOR (with very slight 80s SAGA Progrock influences) sounds very impressive. I couldn’t find any weak tune on this record, so therefore it easily receives a high rating. Must-have for AOR fans!!!

Wer auf Rock der alten Schule steht, wird wohl gefallen an denn Finnen von “Myron“ finden. Die Band veröffentlicht in den nächsten Tagen ihren dritten Longplayer, „Slideshow“ der leckeren Rock bietet mit netten AOR Melodien. Mir persönlich sind die Jungs etwas zu schlaf, sie erinnern mich einwenig an „Honeymoon Suite“ die ähnliche Musik machen und bei dehnen mir teilweise das Gesicht einschläft. Ein AOR Liebhaber wird wahrscheinlich extrem auf „Myron“ abfahren, Songs wie die Ballade „Died für the Moment“ oder das das smarte „Take your Side“ haben wirklich ihre Berechtigung und hören sich auch ganz schön an. Was mich viel mehr stört, ist die schlappe Produktion. Wenn ich mir zum Beispiel „Casanova“ oder „Statetrooper“ anhöre die von „Michael Voss“ produziert werden, sind das wahre Welten. Einen fetten Sound würde den Songs von „Myon“ nämlich wirklich sehr gut tun. Hier findet man keine Ecken und keine Kanten, die Band ist musikalisch sicher nicht schlecht, aber es hört sich alles viel zu seicht an. Teilweise sind die Songs auch wirklich sehr einschläfernd „Before of too Late“ so als Beispiel. Aus diesem Titel hätte man wahrlich viel mehr machen können, vielleicht gehen die Jungs ja Live ab wie eine Rakete, aber mit „Slideshow“ werde ich einfach nicht richtig warm. Versteht mich nicht falsch, die Platte hat schon ihre Qualitäten, aber sie ist in meinen Augen nur für einen AOR Freak wirklich geeignet.

So trifft man sich also wieder! War das Debüt der finnischen Band („Heaven’s Garden“ aus 1999) eine der aller ersten Scheiben, die ich je besprochen habe fürs Bright Eyes, kommen die Skandinavier also wieder zurück an meine Stereo-Anlage / an meinen Schreibtisch. Und fast fällt es mir schwer, das jetzt schreiben zu müssen, aber es hat sich nicht viel verändert seit damals: weder der undefinierbare Stil der Finnen noch mein Hang dazu, mit so einem zwischen den Stühlen befindlichen Sound klar zu kommen. Gefallen mir MYON ob ihres Saga-angehauchten Feelings beim echt leckeren Opener ‚Still Alive’ noch sehr gut, lässt meine Begeisterung im weiteren Verlauf der CD etwas nach. Trockene, fast schon poppige Elektronik-Beats geben sich die Klinke in die Hand mit auf Gedeih und Verderb erzeugten emotionalen, ausladenden Rock-Parts. Eine Weltklasse-Gruppe wie zum Beispiel Styx schafft es scheinbar problemlos, diese beiden Gegenpole in ein schlüssiges Gemeinsames zu vereinen und dabei nicht nebulös zu klingen. MYON brauchen für diese geniale Gratwanderung vielleicht noch ein paar Jahre, die durchaus anerkennenswerten Ansätze sind jedenfalls schon mal vorhanden, nicht zuletzt wegen des durchaus ohrenanschmiegenden ‚Human Nature’. Bei einer zarten Teenie-Schönheit sagte man in meiner Jugendzeit immer gerne „Gib’ der noch ein paar Jahre, aber dann!“. Ich gebe MYON noch drei Jahre aber dann muss es wirklich zünden, gelle!!!

Think of this as a concept: Aha and Saga mixed together with a classy singer and a twist of originality. Despite the odd name, this band work on so many levels. Tracks tend to sound a bit like 'On the Loose' era Saga or a proggy A-ha. Lush melodies, huge keyboards and the great voice of Jukka Nummi combine for a potent combination. This is great melodic/progressive rock played by musicians who know what the hell they are doing. It is hard to find highlights on this CD since so much of it is that good. Its a pleasure to discover bands that are this good that you have never heard of before.

Kotoinen Myonimme on puurtanut hardrockinsa parissa jo kymmenen vuotta täyteen. Nyt Escape Musicin kautta julkaistava Slideshow on yhtyeen kolmas pitkäsoitto. Melodisuudelle pysytään uskollisena, mutta jotain uuttakin nyanssia on levylle löydetty. Vuonna 2002 julkaistuun Ghost in Paradiseen verrattuna selvä uudistus on soundien ja sovituksen vieminen loitommaksi hevistä. Voisi varmaan sanoa, että popahtavampaan suuntaan on menty, ja voihan sitä, jos bändi itsekin vertaa itseään A-haan. Tiedä sitten tuosta vertauksesta, mutta kosketinmelodiat ovat Slideshow'lla hyvin hallitsevassa roolissa tavalla, jota toteuttivat kultaisella 80-luvulla kaikki poppareista jenkkiläisiin stadionrockareihin a'la Van Halen. Tuotanto sinänsä on onnistunut erinomaisesti; soittimet ovat juuri passelissa balanssissa tämän tyyppiseen seesteiseen fiilistelyyn.

Toisaalta juuri samainen seesteisyys on Slideshow'n kompastuskivi. Iskevyyttä ja tempoa kaipaisi sekaan useammin, ja Ghost in Paradisen rivakkuutta tulee välillä ikävä. Tusina biisiä näin rauhallista tunnelmointia vaatii rauhallisemman luonteen kuin meikäläiseltä löytyy. Hyvä levy Slideshow silti on, sopivina annoksina ja sopivissa fiiliksissä nautittuna.

Oululaisryhmä on levy-yhtiö- ja laulajavaihdoksen jälkeen saanut valmiiksi kolmannen kokopitkänsä. Slideshow tarjoilee kuuntelijalle tiukan paketin kitaravetoista progressiivista hard rockia, jossa progeilu jää lähinnä mausteeksi biisien ollessa hyvin melodisia ja helposti lähestyttävissä. Erityisesti on aihetta mainita uusi laulaja JUKKA NUMMI, joka tuntuu ainakin äänensä puolesta istuvan orkesteriin kuin koivupilke silmäkulmaan. Varsinaisia hittibiisejä ei ihan äkkiseltään pomppaa esiin, sillä kappaleet ovat järjestään tasaisen vahvoja. Aiempaan tuotantoon nähden meininki on hieman rauhoittunut ja AOR-elementit ovat nousseet selkeästi pintaan, mutta ei tässä nyt ihan TOTOA olla -vielä.

Pienet miinukset tulevat kuitenkin tuotantopuolesta, sillä levyn äänimaailma on ohuen puoleinen. Selkeimmin tämä tulee esiin rummuissa, jotka ovat liian konemaiset ja hämmästyttävän ponnettomat. Paria hieman rivakammin kulkevaa rallia myös kaipaisi piristämään hieman seesteiseksi käyvää meininkiä. Kaiken kaikkiaan kyseessä on kuitenkin hyvin hallittu kokonaisuus, joka toimii ihan omillaan tai vaikkapa hyvänä fiilistelypalana muun paukkeen kuuntelun lomassa.
